Oriental Flora

Smell as a Curatorial Medium

Oriental Flora was conceived as an exhibition exploring flora as part of everyday life, where herbs, plants, and flowers were presented not as distant symbols but as lived, familiar presences shaping memory, health, and daily rituals.

Central to the curatorial approach was the use of smell as a storytelling medium. Each artwork was paired with a specially designed scent, crafted to evoke memory, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. Herbs, botanicals, and olfactory cues awakened associations of childhood, health, and social customs, transforming the exhibition into a layered sensory experience that engaged visitors beyond the visual. By activating both personal and collective memory, scent offered an alternative form of cultural exchange and encouraged deeper reflection and conversation.

Spatial design was equally integral. The conventional white-cube gallery was transformed into a lived-in environment, where sofas, dining tables, a bathtub redefined the exhibition space. These elements acted as scenographic devices—structuring movement, shaping encounters, and softening the atmosphere to encourage reflection and connection. The furniture created zones of intimacy and familiarity, enabling audiences to slow down and engage more deeply with the artworks and with themselves.

As an extension of the exhibition, a series of workshops invited active participation: adults explored olfactory art through guided sessions, while children engaged in natural painting and creative activities. These programs reinforced the exhibition’s ethos of embodiment and everyday connection, turning the gallery into a participatory environment of learning, making, and sensory discovery.

Through this combination of scent, space, and storytelling, Oriental Flora redefined exhibition-making as an embodied, multisensory experience. Visitors not only viewed artworks but inhabited them—slowing down, staying longer, and engaging more fully. The project demonstrated the potential of curatorial design to create environments that foster cultural dialogue, emotional resonance, and meaningful participation.
