Unnoticed Life
Canal Dream Festival, London, 2023
As curator and designer of the visual arts programme for the Canal Dream Festival along Regent’s Canal, we designed and organised Unnoticed Life, a site-specific exhibition exploring the hidden narratives of life within canal environments. The project focused on making visible the subtle, often overlooked aspects of daily existence on the canal, transforming the boats themselves into immersive stages for contemporary art.
Within a tight timeframe, the studio assembled a diverse collection of works—including performances, installations, sound art, and visual arts—and strategically integrated them throughout the vessels. Every element was carefully positioned to guide visitors through a layered journey, balancing intimacy, surprise, and engagement while respecting the unique spatial characteristics of each boat.
The exhibition invited audiences to navigate and inhabit the spaces actively, encountering artworks in unexpected ways that heightened awareness of the overlooked and ephemeral aspects of canal life. By embedding the art directly within its living context, the project created an immersive dialogue between environment, artwork, and audience.
Unnoticed Life exemplifies our approach to site-specific curatorial design, combining spatial awareness, narrative, and multi-disciplinary artworks to produce thought-provoking, experiential exhibitions that encourage audiences to engage with the world from fresh perspectives.
